oh look who's still alive

It's that time again, folks.

1. What did you do in 2015 that you'd never done before?
Went to my parents' lake house. Took a French class. Accompanied my trivia team to semi-finals (we lost, but had we not bet on the final question, would have taken first place. It was dark times).
Oh! Less "did" more "had done to me," but I got hit on by a stranger for the first time, while at a bar. Unfortunately, it was an older black dude who SNUCK UP BEHIND ME OUT OF FUCKING NOWHERE AND KISSED MY CHEEK. He's goddamn lucky I froze instead of instinctively punching. At first I thought he'd mistaken me for someone else, as is not uncommon for me (so many times people have come up to me and started talking, thinking I'm someone else, because all fat Hispanic girls with glasses look alike, I guess?) and I kept asking "Have we met?" and "I don't think I know you..." but the music at the bar (karaoke night) was so goddamn unnecessarily loud (like, seriously, NO ONE sounds good at that volume, it was awful) that it took a few times for him to hear me. Then he told me, "Don't let anyone tell you you're not sexy! You got big (something something, sounded like "cheeks"?)." Which... what? Then he asked for a hug and I squinched down even further into my own neck and said something about not being into hugs. "Oh," he said, "You don't hug n******?" Thankfully a song was ending so it was audible when I shouted "I don't hug anybody!" and he said "You don't hug n******, huh?" a few more times before wandering off and I yelled "WHAT THE FUCK" as my extremely drunk companion laughed. Sir, I promise you, your skin color didn't even come close to making the goddamn list of Problems I Had With That Situation.
Like I said, never been hit on by a stranger before, and I'd kind of always hoped that if it did happen, it would involve someone, y'know, talking to me.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I guess I did lose weight. Didn't do any better in school, though.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
A few folks on the facebooks, I think.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Not this year. A professor I quite liked passed away, but that's about it.

5. What countries did you visit?
Stayed in the US.

6. What would you like to have in 2016 that you lacked in 2015?
Some goddamned idea what I'm doing. Something resembling a sense of purpose.

7. What dates from 2015 will remain etched upon your memory?
Nothing really stands out.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Didn't really achieve anything much this year.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Those incompletes I had to take last year? Still there! I don't know how I've not been kicked out of the program entirely. Lost my assistantship, which sucks, but they gave me two classes as an adjunct last semester--it looks like I probably won't have any this semester, though.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Suspect I re-sprained my ankle at some point; days after I drive a lot (like, 8+ hours) or walk for long periods it swells up and hurts quite a bit.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
My bag that says "WORLD'S OKAYEST STUDENT" is both accurate and perfectly sized.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My mother, as always, has been amazingly strong.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Never a fan of a lot of my relatives' behavior--we got some hella ignorant, racist family members.

14. Where did most of your money go?
The usual costs. Food, housing, etc.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Nothing that I can recall.

16. What song will always remind you of 2015?
I don't even know. Didn't listen to a lot of music this year.

17. Compared to this time last year, you are:
Happier or sadder: A bit happier, in that at least I'm not crying multiple times a day, every single day.
Thinner or fatter: Thinner.
Richer or poorer: About the same.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Probably should have written those papers that I need in order to get my Incompletes changed, but eh. Should have graded things for my classes sooner, too.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Honestly the longer I am in school the more I get the feeling I should not be.

20. How will you be spending/did you spend Christmas?
We went to my parents' lake house for Christmas. It helped; spending time in a place where there were no old memories of Emma.

21. What was your favorite month of 2015?
June was pretty good. The whole gay marriage thing, the last Taft St. reunion at Te House of Tea, and that time a student posted "Ms. Bravo, is that you?" on a message board about cephalopods.

22. Did you fall in love in 2015?
Same as before. Other party is still completely uninterested. Story of my life.

23. How many one-night stands?

24. What was your favorite TV program?
Brooklyn Nine-Nine was consistently good; also started watching The Librarians and enjoyed it. Empire and </i>How to Get Away With Murder</i> are always a thrillride, and Jessica Jones was really, really good, as well.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

26. What was the best book you read?
I think the only book I read for non-class stuff was This Republic of Suffering, about how the Civil War completely reframed how America handled death and dying.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Don't think I made any.

28. What did you want and get?
I can't think of anything off the top of my head.

29. What did you want and not get?
A sense of purpose.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
I didn't actually see any movies until the very end of the year, when my sister showed us Mad Max: Fury Road. I liked it, but it seems like the type of movie meant for theaters.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 31 and did nothing.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
I dunno.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2015?
"Cover that shit up, no one wants to see it." Same as always.

34. What kept you sane?

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
There were a lot. Many people are very pretty.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The gay marriage ruling pleased me a quite a lot. The issues surrounding refugees (no, idiot governors, you can't just refuse to accept them).

37. Who did you miss?

38. Who were the best new people you met?
Didn't meet a whole lot of new people; a couple of folks who join us on our trivia team are pretty neat.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2015:
I actually enjoy teaching... it's literally everything else about academia that stresses me out so much I can barely function. Awesome.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
I don't know that I have one.
